La devoción del pueblo de San Sebastián de los Reyes al Santísimo Cristo de los Remedios es recogida por Leopoldo Jimeno en su libro de 1892 cuando dice de los habitantes de esta localidad “que aunque muestren indiferentismo a las prácticas religiosas, son fanáticos y apasionados por el Cristo de los Remedios, al que prestan un culto y veneración dignos de todo encomio”. Jimeno acertó en esta definición, quizás cargue las tintas en lo de fanáticos, pero, sin lugar a dudas, resume bastante bien los sentimientos de este pueblo por su Cristo y, en esto casi me atrevería a decir que se incluyen los creyentes y menos creyentes; para corroborarlo no hay más que presenciar el paso de la imagen por las calles un 28 de agosto, y ese sentimiento hacia nuestro Cristo ha sido contagiado tanto a nativos como a los que llegados de fuera han arraigado en nuestro pueblo.
Os diré como anécdota que un amigo y antecesor mío era agnóstico y un día me contaba que él no entraba a la capilla del Cristo, pero que ”hablaba” con Él a través del muro.
De dónde viene esta devoción y el título de Cristo de los Remedios, no se sabe con certeza, pues todavía no han sido localizados los documentos que despejen esta incógnita, pese a las exhaustivas búsquedas en los archivos diocesanos de Madrid y Toledo, realizadas con motivo de la celebración del II Centenario de la fundación de la Hermandad del Santísimo Cristo de los Remedios, y que tanto nuestro siempre recordado y nunca olvidado Francisco Martín Moreno, siendo secretario de la Hermandad como yo “buceamos” en decenas de legajos sin conseguir encontrar solución a este interrogante. Es más, todos los que han escrito sobre la historia de nuestro pueblo no nos han despejado esta incógnita, como han sido Laureano Montero, Leopoldo Jimeno, Isidoro Rodríguez “Doro”, e incluso yo mismo.
En una conferencia que dimos Francisco Martín y yo el 11 de septiembre de 2014, se expusieron muchos datos pormenorizados y un tanto novedosos de las cofradías existentes en San Sebastián de los Reyes desde principio y bien mediado el siglo XVII, aunque ya en la provisión real de 1525, que se conserva en el Archivo Municipal, ya queda bastante clarificado la existencia de alguna de ellas. Así que ha habido que contentarse con algunas hipótesis sobre esa devoción. Todo esto fue publicado muy detalladamente en la revista que editó ese año la Hermandad del Cristo.
Lo que sí está perfectamente documentado es la primera vez que aparece una mención al Cristo de los Remedios, y además por duplicado, tanto en el aspecto religioso como en el civil como son en un libro de difuntos de la parroquia como en un libro de escribanía del Archivo Municipal en un testamento de 1645 en el que Joseph Bravo deja una manda de 30 reales para el Santo Cristo de los Remedios. En 1649 Bartolomé Barba deja mandado que a su fallecimiento digan 40 misas en el altar del Cristo de los Remedios.

Con anterioridad a la fecha de 1645 hay constancia en varios documentos de que existía en la iglesia la imagen de un Cristo, pero no aparece con denominación alguna, deduzco que es el Cristo que citan algunas veces como el Cristo del Concejo y en un inventario lo mencionan como el Cristo Grande, todo esto nos hace llegar a la conclusión de que se están refiriendo al que recibe posteriormente la denominación de Cristo de los Remedios, pues estaba colocado su altar en el muro lateral izquierdo de la capilla mayor, donde se abriría unos años después una puerta y la verja que da acceso a la Capilla donde actualmente se venera.
Construcción de la Capilla del Cristo
Grande debió ser el arraigo de esta devoción, pues a finales del siglo XVII, varios vecinos acordaron el construirle una capilla, se desconocen los motivos porqué de ello desistieron Jacinto Gadea, Francisco de Urosa y Diego de Jaraquemada de costear su construcción, bien pudo ser por falta de recursos o incluso por desavenencias.
En 1699, se pide licencia al Arzobispo de Toledo para construir la actual Capilla, según nos relata Laureano Montero en su obra Crónica de San Sebastián de los Reyes, corriendo con los gastos de su construcción el matrimonio formado por don Andrés de Navacerrada Magarra y doña Ángela del Campo Gadea, otorgándoseles el patronato de la Capilla, así como el uso perpetuo de cuatro sepulturas contiguas al altar del Cristo, pero con el compromiso de que si al abrir la puerta en el muro sobreviniese algún perjuicio éste sería costeado a sus expensas sin derecho alguno sobre la Capilla que debía de formar parte de la iglesia.
La Capilla fue bendecida con toda solemnidad y festejo por parte del pueblo el día 28 de agosto de 1702 por don Lorenzo del Campo, Vicario General de Alcalá y de todo el Arzobispado de Toledo, y que era natural de San Sebastián de los Reyes. Días después recibe el agua bautismal en esta capilla una hija de los benefactores citados.
Origen de las Fiestas del Cristo
Podemos afirmar que la fiesta en honor del Cristo se instaura entre 1645 y 1653, pues en la primera fecha las fiestas se hacen por la Degollación de San Juan Bautista que es el 29 de agosto. Del año 1653 hay un contrato que firman el alcalde, Francisco Aguado y el cura, Eugenio Aguado, con el autor de comedias, Adrián López, para que la compañía de éste haga dos funciones, una por la mañana y otra por la tarde, el día 28 de agosto.
Existe otro documento de 25 de agosto de 1662, en el que las autoridades y priostes del Cristo de los Remedios piden licencia para correr cuatro toros al día siguiente de la fiesta que celebran el lunes 28 de agosto, así como tener algunas invenciones de fuego.
Como se deduce de los datos mencionados, es que a mediados del siglo XVII hay dos hechos constatados: que los vecinos de San Sebastián celebran sus fiestas los días 28 y 29 de agosto, que corren toros y queman pólvora y que lo hacen en honor del Cristo de los Remedios.
Refundación de la Hermandad del Cristo
Será el 9 de octubre de 1814, apenas liberado San Sebastián de los Reyes de las huestes napoleónicas, cuando un grupo de vecinos vuelven a “refundar” la Hermandad y Cofradía del Cristo de los Remedios. Por suerte se conservan los Estatutos y los nombres de sus fundadores y que fueron los siguientes: Juan Frutos Magarra, Esteban González, Manuel Manrique, Francisco López, Juan Colmenar, Manuel Esteban, Francisco Menoyo, Felipe Salazar, Sebastián Frutos, José Paredes, José Izquierdo, Juan Navacerrada, Juan López, Eugenio Frutos, Joaquín Díaz, Antonio Frutos, Silvestre García, Joaquín del Portillo, Esteban Perdiguero, Celestino Frutos y el párroco Don Pedro Gregorio de Castejón. El orden en que aparecen los fundadores responde a la edad de los mismos, Juan Frutos (79 años) a Celestino Frutos (34 años).
